Foster Homes Change Lives

Every year, nearly 2,500 animals spend time in loving foster homes before finding their forever families. That lifesaving work is possible because of foster volunteers like you, who open their homes and hearts to pets who need a little extra support along the way.

Fostering is temporary by nature, but the impact can last a lifetime.

Foster homes give animals the space to heal, grow, and prepare for what comes next. Depending on the pet, that might look like rest and recovery, medical care, behavior support, or simply time to grow big, strong, and confident in a home setting.

We work closely with every foster to create the right match, and we’re with you every step of the way. We provide:

  • Training and guidance
  • All necessary supplies
  • Complete medical care
  • Ongoing support from our dedicated team

You’re never doing this alone. When you foster with us, you become part of a community that’s changing lives, one home at a time.

Setting You Up For Success

Before any foster placement, we take the time to talk through all the important details together, so you know exactly what to expect. That includes:

  • Species, age, and size
  • Any medical needs or medications
  • Behavioral considerations, if applicable
  • An estimated length of time in foster care
  • The support, resources, and training available to you

Our goal is simple: to make sure fostering feels manageable, rewarding, and like the right fit for you and your home.

Is Fostering Right For Me?

Fostering looks different for everyone, and there’s no single “right” way to help. This quick guide is designed to help you decide whether fostering with Nevada Humane Society feels like a good fit for your life right now.

Fostering May Be A Great Fit If You:

  • Have space to keep a foster pet separate from people or pets when needed, especially during quarantine
  • Feel comfortable following feeding schedules, medication plans, or care instructions
  • Can offer a calm, patient environment, even when pets are messy, shy, or still learning
  • Are open to fostering more than one animal at a time, particularly litters
  • Appreciate clear guidance and ongoing support from our team
  • Like knowing your time and care are making a direct, lifesaving impact

Fostering Might Be More Challenging If You:

  • Cannot safely separate foster pets from people or animals when needed
  • Are currently looking to adopt a permanent pet
  • Have a schedule that makes consistent daily care difficult
  • Feel uncomfortable managing basic medical care, such as medications or frequent feedings
  • Prefer pets that require little structure or routine

And that’s okay. There are many meaningful ways to support the pets in our care, and fostering is just one of them.

Not Sure Yet? That’s Completely Normal.

Many foster volunteers start by asking themselves:

  • What ages or species feel manageable for me?
  • Do I prefer short-term or longer placements?
  • Am I comfortable caring for pets who may be sick, shy, or still developing?

Our foster team is always happy to talk through options, answer questions, and help you find a role that feels both rewarding and realistic. You don’t have to have it all figured out to get started.
