“Oso just lit up when he met Kayla! We could hardly believe it, he was like a completely different dog. She was his person and he knew it.” -Sarah Goulart, Dog Evaluator, Nevada Humane Society
We never would have guessed that Oso would blossom into the perfect therapeutic companion for sweet Kayla -but these two are BFFs!
Oso was extremely nervous and under-socialized when he came to our Carson City Shelter this summer. He came in as stray so we didn’t know much about his history, but were able to tell from his behavior that he had been mistreated in the past. But we could tell there was a sweet, loving dog inside this nervous boy that just needed a little extra love and attention to come out of his shell. To get him ready to find a happy Forever Home, Oso spent a month in our PUPS on Parole program at Warm Springs Correctional Center learning basic commands and working on socialization. This extra training gave Oso the confidence he needed to blossom into an amazing dog!
Kayla first learned about Oso when she was searching for the perfect dog for her 22nd Birthday. She has cerebral palsy and was hoping for a dog who would be a gentle, therapeutic companion. She was a bit nervous as she had been attacked by a large dog when she was ten, and they still made her uneasy. Kayla and her sister spent months searching local shelters and sanctuaries for the perfect dog. They came across Oso’s story on the PUPS Parole Facebook page and reached out to learn more about him and meet him.

It turns out Oso is drawn to helping and being therapeutic. This timid, nervous dog blossomed into an amazing companion for Kayla and the two are a perfect match!
Kayla shared with us that Oso’s personality really started to show after a couple of weeks and that he is quirky and a lot of fun. She and Oso love to cuddle and take naps together.
“Oso has brought joy to our entire family and we all love him so much!” -Kayla Soderstrom, Oso’s dog mom.
